For our first collection we collaborated with designer David Ericsson. His thoughtful approach to consider the value of craftwork makes him a perfect counterpart for us. The collaboration resulted in two products: Deckchair OONA and sideboard NOOM
David is one of his generation’s most inspiring designers. Together we share the same love for carefully crafted furniture.
Martin met David at Malmstens, where David studied furniture design. Later they teamed up as designer and master cabinet maker for several projects. It felt just natural to ask David to design the first collection for Atelier Sandemar.
Atelier Sandemar is a contemporary furniture manufactory based in the Swedish archipelago, south of Stockholm - our unique products are developed and handcrafted here. Atelier Sandemar reflects our devotion to natural materials, passion for details and long lasting craftsmanship. Our products are drawing the focus to the importance of aesthetics and functionality and high quality. As a consequence of an elaborated design process, value is being added to a traditional skill set. This symbiosis is reflected in each of our products, bringing out the best in craft and design.
Atelier Sandemar was founded by Lilian de Souza and Martin Altwegg. Having our background in both fields - design and craft, we began our journey working as a supplier for small-scale series for companies such as Svenskt Tenn, Källemo and Carl Malmstens AB amongst others. We also produced custom-made furniture for private costumers, who share the same love for high-quality furniture as we do. They appreciate our capabilities and knowledge of our craft. After several years we finally felt ready to fulfill our dream to produce our own products. With Atelier Sandemar we want to regain the value of traditional craftwork and by that increase the quality and uniqueness of our furniture.
We met in Zurich while working for Studio Hannes Wettstein and together moved to Sweden in 2009 to fulfill our dream to start our own furniture manufactory. Martin is a trained fine cabinet maker, with an additional education in furniture design and a position as Associated Professor Science in Cabinet Making and Furniture Design at Malmstens. He also consults several furniture companies in questions of product-development. Moving to Sweden Lilian took the chance to do a Master at Konstfack, where she deepened her interest in the field of ceramics and glass. In 2011 we found the perfect place near Dalarö - close to Stockholm and close to the archipelago. We began expanding our workshop and Atelier Sandemar was born.
